New Additions to Model UN

New features at the 2020 Model UN:

Summits
Summits are dynamic resolution-writing committees convened by the Secretariat around specific issue-topics. 2020’s Model UN conferences will contain one or two Summits, depending on the preferences of each Secretariat. This year, each Summit will take place in two phases:

1) Public Forum – takes place early Saturday. The Public Forum is moderated by the Secretariat and is open to all members of the General Assembly, ICJ, DPI, or Security Council. Attendees can seek recognition to give public comment – these comments can introduce research, suggest solutions, pose problems, or offer perspective related to the issue-topic of the Summit. The Public Forum will close once the time set by the Secretariat has elapsed or when all the attendees seeking recognition have been recognized. At the conclusion of the Public Forum, the convening members of the Secretariat will invite several attendees to attend the Closed Session.

2) Closed Sessions – takes place Saturday afternoon. The Closed Session is a smaller working-group composed of invitees from the Public Forum. The Closed Session is moderated by the Secretariat and is tasked with producing a resolution related to the Summit’s issue-topic that can be introduced to the General Assembly. The resolution must include a sponsor from the General Assembly. The Closed Session will end upon finalization of the resolution or once the time set by the Secretariat has elapsed.

Showcase
The Showcase is a championship debate session held on Saturday, December 5, at 12:00 Noon Central Time. Invitation to the Showcase is the highest honor offered at this year’s 2020 Model UN. The highest 2 resolutions from each Model UN Conference will be invited to present before a joint committee composed of the Outstanding Statesperson winners from each conference. The Showcase will be live-streamed to all MUN attendees who wish to watch and cheer on their peers and classmates. The docket for the Showcase will be published at least two weeks in advance, to give committee members time to research and prepare their arguments.

Global Forum
As part of our partnership with the Tolima YMCA in Ibague, Colombia, we will be hosting a global forum on Saturday, December 5, at 11:00 AM Central Time. The Global Forum will be open to students who register from either Model UN conference, particularly those with some Spanish-speaking ability (although this is not required). Delegates will work together with students from the YMCA in Colombia to tackle and resolve an international issue. Registration for the Global Forum can be found on the Conference App.

Tomfoolery Fundraising Committee
This year, we will be hosting a Tomfoolery Fundraising Committee during the Saturday social session of Model UN. Use this opportunity to take care of business deemed too trivial, nonsensical, or otherwise irrelevant for normal chamber debate. The Tomfoolery committee will be considering the top four submitted resolutions. Each student may only submit one Tomfoolery resolution for consideration. Delegates do not necessarily need to be on a GA team to submit a Tomfoolery Resolutions. Resolutions must be uploaded by midnight on Friday. The packet of Tomfoolery resolutions will be chosen Saturday morning of the conference and updated on the YMCA CCE app.
